TAMPA - The national food stamp program will start seeing a cut in funding beginning November 1. According to a bay area charity, the consequences will be immediate. Metropolitan Ministries launching biggest food drive

A local charity is looking to feed thousands of families this holiday season, so they're starting early.

Bill Currie Ford in Tampa helped Metropolitan Ministries kick-off this year's campaign.

Folks were asked to bring in food donations to help fill up the bed of a Ford F-150 truck and a vintage mustang convertible.

The auto dealership's general manager, Tim Joslin said he's glad his company could help out. Read more>

Metropolitan Ministries expands to house twice as many

TAMPA — Amy Elam led visitors through red and blue preschool classrooms with tiny toilets, community rooms and meeting spaces and one of the 52 apartments, that look like hotel suites, at Metropolitan Ministries newly finished expansion.

Elam and her 12-year-old daughter are among 41 families and nine single women who currently live at the shelter and will move into the apartments next door, called MiraclePlace.

The expansion will allow Metropolitan Ministries to shelter twice as many people. Read more>

Published: July 30, 2013   SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - The gray clay was "mushy and cold" to 7-year-old Megan.

But the youngster from Metropolitan Ministries, which serves those in need, liked the way it felt as she shaped it into a pinch pot in a recent Healing Arts ceramics program.

Megan was among 21 children from the organization who spent an afternoon recently at The Centre for Girls learning about ceramics and creating a clay pinch pot and a dish, as well as a watercolor painting. Read more>

Tampa non-profit to open new housing facility for families

Amy Elam and her husband moved to Tampa earlier this year with their children hoping for employment and a better future.    

Within weeks, they were in trouble. Elam's husband is self employed and she works in the hospitality industry.

The downturn in the economy meant it was difficult for them to find and keep work.

Elam says, "We lived in a hotel for about six months."

Things were spiraling downward for the family, but soon they would rapidly get out of control. Read more>

metromin-buildingplayground-300x200The Tampa Tribune today reports on Miracle Place, the new transitional housing campus under construction by Metropolitan Ministries. Miracle Place will open in mid-August 2013 with 52 families moving into new apartments.

The construction of the Miracle Place campus was made possible with financing through the New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC) Program. FCLF provided $10 million in tax credit allocation for the project. (Read more about Metropolitan Ministries here, and about FCLF's NMTC Program here.)

Metropolitan Ministries to expand center's kitchen

HOLIDAY - Although a transitional housing project is on hold, Metropolitan Ministries plans to proceed on a $1 million kitchen expansion at its Pasco Outreach Center in Holiday.

Gov. Rick Scott recently vetoed a $1.3 million state grant that hurt the short-term prospects of building transitional housing, said Tim Marks, president of the Tampa-based Metropolitan Ministries. Read more>

Metropolitan Ministries partners with Feed The Children to provide for needy families

TAMPA, Fla. - When you struggle to make ends meet, like Angie Hardy does, it's  easy to find hope in two cardboard boxes.

"It means we're going to have  food to eat, and I'm very appreciative that we were able to get it," she said.

Hardy is one of 400 families that applied for and received a 25-pound  box of food and a box of personal care products. The event is part of  Metropolitan Ministries' partnership with the global organization Feed The  Children.

Bullet don't stop a woman training for the Gasparilla 5K


It has been almost five years since Jessica Myrick was shot three times, one bullet skimming by her heart and piercing her lungs.

Sometimes when she runs, her chest feels tight, as if it hasn't opened all the way back up, she said.

But Myrick, now 23, keeps pushing herself a little farther. She plans to run the Gasparilla Distance Classic 5K with several other residents of Metropolitan Ministries, where she has lived since June. read more>


Future homeless shelter gets $100K boost


Metropolitan Ministries' plans for a homeless shelter in Pasco County got a boost Thursday when Generations Christian Church pledged $100,000 for the cause.

Church leaders donated a $50,000 check Thursday morning that will help pay for renovations to the kitchen facilities at the charity's outreach center on U.S. 19 and the new residential program.

"It's not an emergency shelter," said the Rev. Dan Campbell, director of development for Metropolitan Ministries' Pasco mission. "It's a transitional program that will help families move from homelessness to self-sufficiency. It will be the first in Pasco County." Read more>

Metro Ministries plans expansion

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

With only two days before Thanksgiving, Metropolitan Ministries says some items are in short supply and donations are urgently needed.

They say they specifically need more turkeys, fruit and yams.

There are 2,200 families scheduled to pick up food in the next two days, and organizers say 300 new families signed up for help yesterday alone.

Metro Ministries President Tim Marks says donations are down from last year by 100,000 pounds.

"We're going out and buying what we can but if people can come out alongside us and help, it would be greatly appreciated," Marks said. View more>

The Bay area's fishing community has come together this morning at Metropolitan Ministries' new holiday tent at 400 West Palm Avenue to show support for poor and homeless families.

It might be something we take for granted, and this morning one group who knows about that reality has hope through a local charity.

More than a dozen needy families are getting back on the road because of Wheels of Success, which is providing them with donated vehicles. But it's not just a free giveaway, and that's what makes the program special.

Metropolitan Ministries Named Best NonProfit in 2011

Metropollitan Ministries was named "Best NonProfit" in a recent "Best of the Bay 2011" Reader's Poll. The 2011 Readers’ Poll broke all previous voting records, drawing 283,174 votes — 100,000 more than last year. Best City, a brand new category this year, was the biggest vote-getter and the closest race of all, pulling in more than 7,000 votes total. Tampa eked out a victory over St. Pete by a margin of just 122 votes. But cheer up, Pinellas; you won Best County.

It's a mix of the haves and have-nots Sunday mornings at Hyde Park United Methodist Church.

As well-dressed members park their SUVs, BMWs and late-model Toyotas in the lot before the 8:30 a.m. service, they exchange greetings with men and women in thrift-store castoffs, lugging their worldly belongings in garbage bags and backpacks. HOLIDAY — In January 2009, a group of 40 parishioners at a dying Methodist church in a poor neighborhood decided to do something remarkable:

The parishioners voted to close the church's doors and reopen as a charity focused on helping the poor and homeless of Pasco County.

In the short time since then, Joining Hands Community Mission Inc. has created such a good reputation that Metropolitan Ministries — the vast charitable network based in Tampa — decided it wanted to be part of it. On July 1, the two nonprofit organizations merged to become one agency.  Read More>

Those who made Kids Camp possible got their payoff in the form of happy young faces as the camp concluded with 150 campers and their siblings getting backpacks loaded with school supplies. The backpacks were from the Backpacks of Hope of Metropolitan Ministries.
