When former Uplift U® self-sufficiency program resident, Wanda, attended a Metropolitan Ministries Employment Bootcamp two years ago, she had no idea that her life would forever be impacted.
Chris Reyes, a Metropolitan Ministries Ambassador, was a volunteer at the same Employment Bootcamp, when she met Wanda. The two were paired with each other for resume building and interview coaching exercises.
Chris recalls immediately loving Wanda’s resume – she had cashier experience, cleaning experience and was bilingual. Chris coached Wanda through mock interviews and professional speaking. She taught her proper word usage, grammar and how to professionally present herself. Chris used personal stories and experiences to help illustrate her points.
A few months later, Chris was volunteering at the Holiday Tent when she spotted a familiar face – It was Wanda!
Now an employee, Wanda was excited to share the good news and reminisce about their time together at the boot camp. Wanda expressed to Chris how impactful her coaching was – she was now employed! They shared an obvious connection.
“The few hours I spent with Chris two years ago have impacted my life and will last a lifetime,” Wanda said, beaming with joy.
Wanda wasn’t the only one who had a meaningful experience. Chris expressed how important it is to her to be part of such a fulfilling volunteer opportunity.
Last Friday, as the Ambassadors – including Chris – gathered in Hope Hall to coach a new group of hopeful residents, Wanda spotted Chris. Although they were not able to speak that day, Wanda made sure Chris knew she was still working here at Metro.
