I get to hear a lot of stories from our volunteers. . .this one in particular reminded me why we are here to serve.
“When I was a playing with a child as a volunteer in the Metropolitan Ministries Holiday Tent, he opened the toy refrigerator to get a snack for our ‘tea party.’ It was empty. And what he said next shocked me. “It’s just like our fridge at home…almost nothing,” he said. “I didn’t know what to do."
While most people will worry about eating too much this holiday season, 1 in 4 children in Tampa Bay live in households that struggle to put food on the table.
Here at home, poverty may not look exactly the same as it does in a war-torn region or a developing country, but food insecurity is affecting children right here in our community. We routinely see working parents coming to Metropolitan Ministries who have to choose between rent and food or utilities and food.
The holidays are especially hard on hurting families. Who doesn’t want to make Christmas special for their children? 18,000 families came to the Holiday Tent last year for assistance, and we are expecting the same again this year.
I know it’s only September. But in order to be ready for the families who are counting on us, we are gearing up for the holidays now. Filling up our food pantry is the first critical step.
There’s many ways you can help fill our shelves and freezer with our most needed items.
What a wonderful gift you can give to families in need in our community.
