October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Posted on October 7, 2016

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and here at Metropolitan Ministries, we see the damaging effects. With more than 106,000 crimes of domestic violence reported to Florida law enforcement in 2014, it is no wonder 80% of our residents have experienced or witnessed domestic violence. Although it seems the only solution for those experiencing the terror of domestic violence is to leave the situation, many cannot because they would have nowhere else to go.

Melody was living in this exact situation. She was a victim each day as her children watched. She knew she needed to get far away from her abuser - it became her top priority. So Melody packed up her life, her children, her pain and headed to Florida. In the beginning, she found refuge at several shelters. But it wasn’t long until the programs weren’t working - Melody and her family were thrown out back on the streets. That is when they found Metropolitan Ministries.

Melody realized it immediately - they were finally safe.

While at Metro, Melody took full advantage of the programs offered. She graduated from Good Life, an 8-week course for survivors of domestic violence. This brought her peace of mind. Now, almost a year after arriving at Metropolitan Ministries, Melody says her life and her children’s lives have been changed. “They helped me so much and I am so thankful for them. They actually gave me a chance,” she said.

Because of your donations, families like Melody’s are given a safe place and a second chance at life. Through counseling and other programs focused on survivors of domestic violence, our clients are able to heal from the past and progress as individuals. These families who once lived in fear now live with hope.

Thank you for your support.
