Metropolitan Ministries Offers Community Easter Meal

Metropolitan Ministries Offers Community Easter Meal

Providing hope to people who desperately need to know they haven’t been forgotten

WHAT:            Satisfying someone’s hunger won’t solve all their problems, but it just might give them a spark of hope and encouragement to ask for the other kinds of life-changing help we offer like safe shelter, counseling, education and job training programs.  Of the individuals and families who come to us, some are fleeing domestic violence, others are working but still having trouble putting food on the table, and many are living in their cars or on the streets.

A homeless community hot Easter meal will be served on April 15th from 12 pm – 2 pm at our Outreach and Prevention Center. “We want to provide our homeless community a quality meal, while treating them with dignity. We want them to feel special…like they are in one of Tampa’s finest restaurants enjoying excellent food and quality service,” said Karl Celestine, Senior Director of Outreach and Preventative Services.

Volunteers from Congregation Schaarri Zedek and the University of South Florida Navigators Group are scheduled to be serving from 9am – 2pm to help with outreach, kitchen and resident services as needed.

Meal Details:

  • As many as 200 homeless (singles and families) are expected to attend on campus

  • 2,500 hot meals will also be distributed to the Tampa Bay community through 28 meal site partners in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties.

  • 400 of those Easter meals will be served at Pinellas Safe Harbor, an emergency homeless shelter and a jail diversion program designed to be a safe haven for those currently homeless and who require services to get back on their feet. Capacity is 450 people (single men and women).  Pinellas Safe Harbor is managed by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. Metro supplies the meals.

  • 112,000 total meals served during Easter Season  (1.7 million meals annually)

  • With the help of community food donations, the Ministries’ cost for one hot meal is just $1.96.
