First Hug

For Homeless Families w/Children, 8 Years Of Age And Under

Funded by the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, First Hug is a Metropolitan Ministries program specializing in crisis stabilization for families, in Hillsborough County, with children 0 to 8 years old. This program, focused specifically on your young children, aims to keep consistency in your children’s lives, while providing key services to help your family deal with issues you are experiencing due to homelessness.

Case managers visit the homes of previously homeless families and also visit homeless families who are displaced and living in temporary shelters

1. With First Hug your family will be able to decrease stress and build a community support system

          - You will have a case plan to guide you to self-sufficiency.

          - You will receive counseling and activities that will help you reduce stress.

2. We will provide guidelines to help your child feel stable, safe, and be successful in school

For Children 0-5 Years old:

  • Your child will receive a developmental screening and visits from our Developmental Specialist to match your child’s needs with services in the community. Once placed in the program that is right for him or her, your child must attend childcare every day. Attendance is important and will be tracked.

 Parent Child Home Program

  • Your 2 or 3 year old child will gain early learning skills and you will learn how to be involved in his/her learning from the start through the Parent Child Home Program, a home visiting experience that includes free toys and books. You will start your child on the path to learning and high school graduation by being a part of this amazing opportunity on and off our campus. Your home visitor will become a trusted ally and will follow your family for 23-46 weeks, depending on the age of your child when they start.

    For Children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade:

    Your child will receive a developmental screening and visits from our Developmental Specialist to match your child’s needs with services in the community. Once placed in the program that is right for him or her, your child must attend childcare every day. Attendance is important and will be tracked.

  • Your child must attend school and afterschool educational support activities every day. Attendance is important and will be tracked. Aside from schooling, your child will have access to tutoring and activities to ensure educational success. They will also receive educational testing to track their learning progress.

  • You will participate in developing a case management plan to help  plan how you will actively participate in your child’s learning. To help you with this plan, you will receive monthly support through parent meetings (attendance required) providing information and opportunities to be involved in your child’s education.

  • You will receive weekly on-going case management visits to ensure that you have the support that you need to help your child and family to be successful.

3. Here is what you need to do:

          - Commit to attendance every day for your child in childcare/school

          - Commit to attending to all parent meetings

          - Commit to participate in your child’s education

          - Commit to participate in all case management, attend all required classes and fully participate in your case plan
