Darlene's Story
Angela Atalla, reporter for Tampa Bays 10, (CBS WTSP), highlighted Darlene’s story and Metropolitan Ministries. The touching story is available for viewing on Tampa Bays 10 website, http://www.tampabays10.com/news/local/extras/article.aspx?storyid=49798. Please read on about Darlene’s story.
Darlene’s story begins like many others; a single mother trying her hardest to provide for her two children with a dream of a better life.
In 2005 her dreams were shattered. After losing her job due to a work related injury, Darlene found herself homeless and afraid. With the help of Social Services, she was able to find her way to Metropolitan Ministries. The Ministries was only able to provide temporary relief to her situation through motel and meal vouchers. Unfortunately, the Ministries has a two month waiting list for admittance to the Family Care Center. “I called everyday to see if a space opened up,” said Darlene.
With no place to turn, Darlene and her children packed all their belongings in their small Saturn and set off for their new home on the sandy shores of Causeway Boulevard. “It was the saddest time of my life, the only place we had to call home was my son’s Cub Scout tent,” said Darlene. Many sleepless nights were spent fighting away rats that tried to crawl into their tiny tent. Darlene constantly feared she would lose her children if someone discovered they were homeless. “The toughest part about being homeless was keeping clean and using the restroom, often we would wash up in a fast food restaurant,” said Darlene.
After weeks of waiting and wondering what would happen to her family, Darlene’s prayers were answered…a room opened up at the Ministries just in time for the holidays. It was a Christmas dream come true. “Once we arrived, we were provided with a warm bed, safety and Christmas presents for the children,” said Darlene. With hope now restored, Darlene was able to begin her new life here at the Ministries.
After dedicating this past year towards rebuilding her life, Darlene is thankful for the home she now has. “It is a modest accommodation, but it is now home…my children feel normal, no longer do they have the look of fear in their eyes,” said Darlene. Without the help of the Ministries, her family’s future was uncertain.
When asked about her outlook on life, she said, “I now have hope.” Darlene’s dream began with a vision of employment, owning her own home and providing for her two children. With the help of the community, Metropolitan Ministries was able to bring positive change in the lives of Darlene’s family. Many others are waiting for your help.
