Orientations

WHAT IS A METROPOLITAN MINISTRIES ORIENTATION LIKE?

It is a tour, a time for questions and answers, a chance to see our staff and volunteers in action, and a time to look into the eyes of our clients and hear their stories.  It is also a MANDATORY event for most volunteers.  Here's the scoop:

What Orientations provide an opportunity for our volunteers and other interested parties to see what goes on behind the scenes.  You'll watch a short video, get a tour of our campus, and learn about volunteer opportunities not normally posted on our web pages.  Most important of all, you'll be able to connect the dots between your task at hand and bringing hope to literally thousands every day.

Who has to attend an orientation?

  • Individuals who want to volunteer on a frequent or recurring basis
  • Leaders of volunteer groups
  • First-time volunteers
  • Those unsure what volunteer opportunities are available
  • Students seeking hours for school
  • Those who would simply like to learn more about the ministry, our mission and clients, and how we operate

Who does NOT have to attend an orientation?

  • Individuals who are working off mandated service hours and do not intend to return upon fulfillment of their hours
  • Members of a large group who are simply joining in on a single-day event

When – Orientations are typically held weekly.  Midweek orientations run from 4:00-5:00 while weekend orientations are from 1:00-2:00.

Where – 2010 N. Florida Ave (the large, white building across from our Thrift Store).  Simply enter the double glass doors adjacent to the asphalt lot on the north.  Parking is available in this lot or in the gravel lot behind 2002 N. Florida Ave (small, red brick building) on the south side of the building.  Our campus spans from N. Florida Ave (northbound traffic only) west to N. Tampa St (southbound traffic only); the latter parking lot is accessible from both streets.

What to Wear – Anything you like unless you plan on volunteering immediately after the orientation.  Volunteers working in our kitchen are required to wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, and a shirt with sleeves.  All others should dress modestly.

How to Register – We make it easy--just show up.  No prior arrangements are required.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long do I have to wait after my orientation before I can start volunteering?  Following orientation and based on availability, individuals wanting to volunteer that day may.  Otherwise, you may schedule at any time either right then or by giving us a call.

  • Will you contact me after my orientation to schedule my volunteer time?  Nope.  There's too many of you and not enough of us (unless of course you want to be that volunteer who makes these calls on our behalf).  In general, it's best for you to consider all you have learned during your Orientation and then call us back when convenient to schedule a time that best fits your availability, skills, and desires.

  • What if I cannot attend an orientation?  On occasion, we'll schedule orientations depending on need.  We have also been know to forego orientations due to extenuating circumstances.  It's best to contact us and perhaps we can give you an abbreviated orientation upon your arrival to volunteer.
