Walking in the front door was always a gamble.

Shelley remembers the addiction. The unpredictable love. The fear and neglect. The survival instinct that kicked in when she was just a little girl. She grew up believing chaos was normal. Every family lives like this, right?

When Shelley became a mother herself, she wanted something different from dysfunction. She wanted to give her children stability, safety, and unconditional love. But the patterns Shelley swore she’d never repeat ran deep.

Fear found its way into Shelley’s home. Bills piled up. Stability slipped away. She saw the uncertainty in her children’s eyes when she tucked them into bed. “I looked at my kids one night and thought, It stops with me,” says Shelley. “I have to break this cycle.”

Shelley reached out to Metro Ministries and joined a residential program. She couldn’t have imagined the change that followed.

Generational Change

At Metro, Shelley found what she’d lacked as a little girl — safety, structure, and steady support.
Thanks to your generosity, Shelley received counseling and took parenting classes — learning
about the effects of trauma, how to move forward in healing, and what healthy love actually looks
like. Her children were surrounded by teachers and mentors who believed in them. For the first
time, Shelley’s precious family had room to grow, to play, and to dream.

“The staff didn’t just help me with my past,” Shelley says. “They helped me build a future. They taught me how to be the mom my kids deserve.”

She earned her GED, completed job training, and became a certified medical assistant — a career she once thought was out of reach. Shelley is setting the standard for her children’s futures. “Metro didn’t just change my life,” she says. “They changed my children’s lives . . . and their children’s lives someday. That’s the impact of the help I received.”
